Institute Jaume Mimó (Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona – ES) visiting Dr. Alberto Iria school – Olhão, Algarve – PT

With the aim of getting to know the implementation process of the Quiet Time with Transcendental Meditation (QT/TM), the Dr. Alberto Iria School Group welcomed the visit of the director of the Jaume Mimó Institute in Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, Professor Mercedes Rom Rodriguez, and the pedagogical coordinator, Professor Eva Fuentes, from March 27 to 29, 2023.

During this visit, the invited teachers sought to connect with and gain a deep understanding of the pedagogical strategy of Quiet Time/TM, applied in the classroom context with students. They had the opportunity to visit and participate in Quiet Time/TM sessions in various classes within this school group, including 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 8th-grade classes. They also engaged in conversations with students and teachers to gather their experiences.

The visit program also included a visit to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Algarve, where they met with the director of the faculty, Dr. Luís Sérgio Vieira, to learn about the scientific studies conducted as part of the EUROPE and FRIENDS projects. These studies aimed to assess the impact of Quiet Time/TM in the school context.”

The Agrupamento de Escolas Dr. Alberto Iria in Olhão comprises 3 schools, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle of basic education, totaling more than 800 students and 120 teachers. Placed in the coastal zone, where the declining of “traditional” activities of fishing and canning industry brought serious problems of poverty and social exclusion persisting in spite of tourism development, the A. Iria is strongly committed to build a humanist, fairer, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

The school is part of the national Programa Territórios Educativos de Intervenção Prioritária (TEIP) whose main aim is promoting educational inclusion in schools located in disadvantaged areas with children ‘at risk’ of social exclusion, and comprising a network of 137 schools in Portugal.

Pioneer of the Quiet Time /Transcendental Meditation programme in Europe, the A. Iria participated as implementing school to 2 Erasmus +co-funded projects EUROPE ( and FRIENDS ( The Agrupamento created deep connections with the local territory and at National level involving the Directorate General of Education (DGE), DGEstE (Directorate General) of Algarve, the Teacher Training Centers (TTC), public structures offering QT/TM to teachers as professional development courses, at regional and national level, the University of Algarve.

Through the Erasmus+ Mobility/Job shadowing program, the A. Iria hosts European schools interested to the QT/TM approach and shares the experience gained over the years in implementing and monitoring Quiet Time with Transcendental Meditation in schools

The A.Iria school will continue its mission of spreading the QT/TM methodology to other schools in Portugal and all over Europe, being also partner of a network of 137 TEIP schools, part of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) connecting more than 12,000 schools in 182 countries (100 in PT), and bringing a model to be easily replicated at European level.

We are a Basic Education Institution (ESO), Baccalaureate, initial vocational training program (funded by the European Union), intermediate and higher vocational training and higher artistic studies.

The school is large in size, with laboratories for professional training and studies take place in morning and afternoon shifts. With an heterogeneous population of students in terms of socio-economic background and educational needs, it has a significative number of students with fewer opportunities.

The Institut Jaume Mimó offers compulsory secondary education (ESO), studies for university entry (bachillerato in Spanish) and vocational training (FP)

Over the last nine years, a series of key actions have been offered to our users with the aim of increasing the international mobility of our students, teachers and non-teaching staff. Networks of partners, projects and actions have been created to improve and enhance internationalization and the creation of international cooperation

We have expertise in working with ERASMUS+ (received the Erasmus accreditation ECHE 2021-2027) and experience in international mobility of students, teachers and staff, in working with eTwinning, networks and projects to foster internationalization and promote skills.

We prioritize inclusion and innovation, management of emotions, personal autonomy, resilience, self-confidence, humanity and the processes of empathy and compassion of students and new learning methodologies to promote school success in an inclusive environment

We are recognized by UAB (Autonomous University of Barcelona) as an innovative pedagogical center and we are reference for 4 schools in the city, to establish similar pedagogical methodologies.

Our High School has all level 5 studies for professional training. We receive professors and master’s students in training.
